How Much Mulch Does Your Property Actually Need?
April 2, 2026 · Summit Outdoor Services

Mulch is one of the best-value upgrades for any property — it instantly cleans up the look of your beds while protecting your plants. But the amount matters more than most people realize.
As a rule of thumb, a two-to-three inch layer is the sweet spot. That is deep enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, but not so deep that it smothers roots or causes rot against stems and trunks. Piling mulch up against a tree — the dreaded "mulch volcano" — actually harms the tree over time.
Refreshing existing mulch usually means adding an inch or so rather than starting from scratch, since last year’s layer breaks down into the soil. Clean edging before mulching keeps everything looking crisp and stops the mulch from spilling into the lawn.
